[Alpha 0.1.9] Dropships

Hey guys,

Been a while since i posted here about dev updates, but hopefully that'll change from now and on.

Right, to the point, so the next thing ill be adding is dropships, i was thinking about doing mounts first but the distances between Major POIs are still too much even for those. The way that i have it planned out atm is to utilize the already existing landing pads that are in every base, what i haven't decided on is whether to make the dropships that you actually walk in its bay and be able to move inside while its flying or to interact with it and strap you in a seat?

Also i haven't decided whether or not to add the ability to jump out with a glider mid air, which sounds pretty fun but would be kinda broken since nobody would actually land at the POI, ever lol.

I'm voting to just interact with it and strap you in a seat. While you're in the ship you get a nice third-person ship view, just like Firefall.  

I think being able to move inside while it's moving would not only be hard to implement, but would be hard to implement well - and it simply doesn't add much to the game.

I think being able to jump out of the ship at any time is important for their usability. It'd feel pretty bad to be stuck in a ship for an extra minute just because.  

I also don't think it'd make the POIs any less used. If there's no reason to go to a POI, forcing people to land in a POI isn't going to make them any more useful -- and besides, if there's enough POIs along the route people will land at them anyways.

While being able to move about inside a dropship would be fun, assuming they're large enough to do so - i'm picturing dropship dance parties and stuff. I agree with @Tragedy that It would likely make their implementation and physics that much more difficult. It could always be something to improve later on if you had the time or inclination to do so.

I second the ability to jump and glide from dropships. They're not really "dropships" if you can't "drop" from them. I won't reiterate Tragedy's points, but they're valid.

You could take inspiration from @Arkii's Firefall addon and include a timetable display near the landing pads. Maybe even extend it so that the ships will only land if someone has pressed a button on the display and stays in the vicinity. The dropship could have a forking path set so that if there is no landing request, it just flies past the POI allowing passengers to glide down. If there is a pickup request it could fork off it's normal path and land for pickup before rejoining it's normal flight path.

Alright, ill go with the simple approach i guess, and ill include the ability to jump out,

Thoughts on dropping in a pod (aka straight down and/or maybe with limited movement) versus a glider?

Realistically, drop-pod tech in dropships would be a waste of resources, even if reusable, to the operating organisation when all passengers have gliders anyway. From a mechanic's standpoint, it restricts the player in a way that isn't entirely necessary. What would a player gain except time by being able to glide from the dropship as opposed to being deposited on the ground? If it's a case of the sheer altitude providing them too much freedom to get places they shouldn't, you could have them dive to a more agreeable altitude before deploying their glider?
